The outlook for the economy of Georgia’s Coastal Corner in 2010 has some good news and some bad news. The good news is: 2010 will be a better year for the economy of the Coastal Corner than 2009 was. The bad news is: 2010 will still be a tough year.

On the plus side, there are signs that the Coastal Corner – Brantley, Camden, Glynn, McIntosh, and Wayne counties -- has turned the corner on the recession. Hospitality and tourism activity is beginning to pick up in Glynn County. Many retailers in coastal counties are also beginning to report increases in sales. Volume at the Port of Brunswick has increased substantially over the past several months.

Buy Local Campaign

buylocal The Wayne County Chamber of Commerce is launching a "Buy Local" campaign aimed at encouraging citizens of Wayne County to shop at home first in an effort to help strengthen our local economy. The effort is being organized in time for holiday shopping but will be an ongoing campaign to encourage hometown shopping throughout the year.

I. D. A. Planning For Growth

Even though some economic indicators are showing positive signs, many businesses are not feeling the impact. However, the Industrial Development Authority (IDA) is making plans to be ready when the economy does turn and industry starts implementing long term expansion plans.

In December, the IDA shared their new Economic Development Plan with Wayne County Commissioners. While all of the specific objectives are not fully developed, the plan attempts to take a comprehensive approach to readying our community to attract new businesses, while working with existing business to grow and expand.
